            <p id="spar0005">Eight brachiopod species, i.e. <italic>Novocrania</italic> sp., <italic>Cryptopora lovisati</italic> (Dreger, 1911), “<italic>Terebratula</italic>” sp., <italic>Megathiris detruncata</italic> (Gmelin, 1791), <italic>Argyrotheca cuneata</italic> (Risso, 1826), <italic>Joania cordata</italic> (Risso, 1826), <italic>Megerlia truncata</italic> (Linnaeus, 1767), and <italic>Platidia anomioides</italic> (Scacchi and Philippi, 1844), have been identified in the Middle Miocene deposits of Kralice nad Oslavou, Moravia, Czech Republic. The species <italic>C. lovisati</italic> and <italic>P. anomioides</italic> dominate the studied assemblage, while others are very rare. <italic>Novocrania</italic>, <italic>C. lovisati</italic> and <italic>M. truncata</italic> are reported for the first time from the Moravian part of the Carpathian Foredeep. In species composition, the assemblage from Kralice resembles other Middle Miocene Paratehyan assemblages, interpreted as shallow water, but the dominance of <italic>C. lovisati</italic> and <italic>P. anomioides</italic> makes it clearly different, indicating an environment deeper than 100 m.</p>

C’est la première découverte de <italic>Novocrania</italic>, de <italic>C. lovisati</italic> et de <italic>M. truncata</italic> dans la partie morave de l’avant-fosse des Carpathes. En ce qui concerne sa composition taxonomique, l’assemblage de Kralice ressemble aux autres assemblages du Miocène moyen de la Paratéthys, interprétés comme représentant des milieux peu profonds ; toutefois, la domination numérique de <italic>C. lovisati</italic> et de <italic>P. anomioides</italic> est un trait très différent, indiquant un milieu situé en dessous de l’isobathe 100 m.</p>

         <title>Introduction</title>
         <p id="par0005">Although brachiopods are common members of the Middle Miocene communities of the Central Paratethys, surprisingly little is known about Miocene brachiopods from the Czech part of the Central Paratethys. The first, and so far the only, record illustrates and briefly describes brachiopods from the boreholes of Přemyslovice, Moravia (<xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2012</xref>) where four species were recognized, i.e. <italic>Terebratula</italic> sp., <italic>Megathiris detruncata</italic> (Gmelin, 1791), <italic>Argyrotheca cuneata</italic> (Risso, 1826), and <italic>Joania cordata</italic> (Risso, 1826), although brachiopods were quite often mentioned without illustrations and descriptions (e.g. <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Doláková et al., 2008</xref>, <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Hamršmíd, 1984</xref> and <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref>). The same applies to the studied sections at Kralice nad Oslavou (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>), where brachiopods were reported in faunal lists by <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Procházka (1893)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula (1893)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Hamršmíd (1984)</xref>, but were never described properly or illustrated. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to give taxonomic descriptions of the brachiopods newly collected from these outcrops.</p>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0010">
         <label>2</label>
         <title>Geological setting</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0010">The locality Kralice nad Oslavou is situated in one of the erosional relics of marine Neogene deposits located on the crystalline rocks of the southwestern margin of the Bohemian Massif (<xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Hladilová et al., 1999</xref>). These relics document the actual extent of the Carpathian Foredeep and post-depositional uplift and erosion (<xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref>). The surrounding terrestrial Neogene sediments occurring in the area of Kralice nad Oslavou were studied by <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Brzák et al. (2001)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0170" ref-type="bibr">Nehyba (2003)</xref>.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0015">Kralice nad Oslavou has long been known as a fossil-rich, Middle Miocene (Lower Badenian) locality (<xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Brzobohatý, 1997</xref>, <xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Brzobohatý, 2001</xref>, <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Hamršmíd, 1984</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Hladíková and Hamršmíd, 1986</xref>, <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Hladilová et al., 1999</xref>, <xref rid="bib0125" ref-type="bibr">Janoschek, 1937</xref>, <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Koutek, 1971</xref>, <xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">Redinger, 1992</xref>, <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Procházka, 1893</xref>, <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Sváček, 1996</xref>, <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula, 1893</xref> and <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek and Holcová, 2003</xref>), and was recently investigated in detail by <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2008</xref>. Three outcrops, situated on the left bank of the Rakovec creek have been distinguished (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>). The greyish claystone exposed in Kralice-I (49° 11.619′ N, 016° 12.493′ E) has not yielded any fossils so far. In the second outcrop, (Kralice-II, 49° 11.591′ N, 016° 12.516′ E) the Miocene is represented by yellowish sandstone with foraminifers dominant (<xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2008</xref>). The Miocene deposits of the third outcrop (Kralice-III, 49° 11.584′ N, 016° 12.538′ E) are represented by yellow marl and calcareous sandstone with a rich fauna of foraminifers, molluscs, bryozoans and echinoderms (<xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref>). The age of these sections is interpreted as Early Badenian (<xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2008</xref>) on the basis of planktonic foraminifers, calcareous nannoplankton, mollusks, bryozoans, and this conclusion is supported by co-occurrence of the Early Badenian forms <italic>Bolboforma moravica</italic> and <italic>B. reticulata</italic> (<xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">Redinger, 1992</xref>).</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0015">
         <label>3</label>
         <title>Material and methods</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0020">The investigated material was collected during fieldwork at Kralice-II and Kralice-III (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>) using samples taken as described by <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2008</xref>. Brachiopods were found in 31 samples, mostly from Kralice-III. The total number of specimens is 134; many damaged or fragmented, and most covered by epitaxial calcite cement. Specimens selected for scanning electron microscopy were mounted on stubs, coated with platinum and examined using a Philips XL-20 microscope at the Institute of Paleobiology, Warszawa. The specimens described here are deposited in the National Museum, Prague, under catalogue numbers P 1940–1968.</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0020">
         <label>4</label>
         <title>Characteristics of the brachiopod fauna</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0025">The brachiopods identified in the Miocene deposits of Kralice nad Oslavou consist of eight species belonging to eight genera in six families (Craniidae, Cryptoporidae, Terebratulidae, Megathyrididae, Kraussinidae, Platidiidae), three orders (Craniida, Rhynchonellida, Terebratulida), and two subphyla (Craniiformea and Rhynchonelliformea) according to the classification adopted in the revised Treatise <xref rid="bib0130" ref-type="bibr">Kaesler (1997–2006)</xref>.</p>

               <p id="par0115">Remarks: <italic>Cryptopora lovisati</italic> is one of the two commonest species in the investigated assemblage. This small rhynchonellide is characterized by elaborate modifications of the deltidial plates forming a wing-like structure. Its shell is small, oval to subcircular, with a high, suberect beak and triangular, hypothyrid foramen. The apical plate is long, and elevated above the valve floor. The teeth are small, hooked, and supported by short dental plates (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>C and D). The dorsal median septum is very high, and is situated at mid-valve (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>G).</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0120">This is the first record of this species from the Miocene of the Czech Republic; however, the presence of the genus <italic>Cryptopora</italic> was already noted from Kralice by <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Hamršmíd (1984)</xref>. In the Central Paratethys <italic>C. lovisati</italic> has so far been recorded only from the Pińczów area, Poland (<xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>). Originally described from the Middle Miocene of Sardinia (<xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Dreger, 1911</xref>) it was also found in the Middle Miocene of northwestern Germany (<xref rid="bib0200" ref-type="bibr">Wienrich, 1999</xref>) and southwestern France (<xref rid="bib0030" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Cahuzac, 2004</xref>). Recently <xref rid="bib0100" ref-type="bibr">Dulai (2010)</xref> described this species from the Late Miocene of northern Italy. <italic>C. lovisati</italic> seems to be restricted to the Miocene of Europe.</p>

               <p id="par0160">Remarks: this small, smooth brachiopod with a large foramen is clearly a juvenile, perhaps of the short-looped genus <italic>Terebratula</italic>, already reported from Kralice (<xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula, 1893</xref>). Various species of <italic>Terebratula</italic> are known from the Paratethys Miocene (e.g. <xref rid="bib0015" ref-type="bibr">Barczyk and Popiel-Barczyk, 1977</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Dulai, 2004</xref>, <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Pisera, 2000</xref>, <xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Schneider, 2009</xref>, <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Dreger, 1889</xref>, <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Meznerics, 1944</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>).</p>

               <p id="par0210">Remarks: <italic>Megathiris detruncata</italic> is easily distinguishable externally by its transversely elongate outline and ornamentation of a few broad ribs, and internally by the presence of two lateral septa. Although rare in the investigated material, this species is one of the most common in the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys (see <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Dulai, 2004</xref>, <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Dulai, 2007</xref> and <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Kroh, 2003</xref>). Its presence at Kralice was already reported by <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula (1893)</xref> under the name <italic>Argiope decollata</italic>. Recently, <italic>M. detruncata</italic> was also noted from Přemyslovice, situated approximately 100 km north of Kralice (<xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2012</xref>). The species is known since the Eocene and lives today in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern North Atlantic. Its extant representatives occur at depths from 16 to 896 m (<xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Álvarez and Emig, 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Brunton and Curry, 1979</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1979</xref> and <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1993</xref>).</p>

                  <italic>A. cuneata</italic> is common in the Miocene of the Central Paratethys but in the investigated material it is rare. Most probably this species was already reported from Kralice under the name <italic>Argiope squamata</italic> (see <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula, 1893</xref>), which is often considered to be a synonym of <italic>A. cuneata</italic> (see <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1990</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>). In modern waters, <italic>A. cuneata</italic> can be found in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern North Atlantic at depth from 5 to 645 m (<xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Álvarez and Emig, 2005</xref>, <xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Brunton and Curry, 1979</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1979</xref> and <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1993</xref>).</p>

It is characterized by a smooth to weakly ribbed surface, prominent cardinal process and tubercles on the inner margin on both valves. Submarginal tubercles are the main feature on which this species was removed from <italic>Argyrotheca</italic> and transferred to <italic>Joania</italic> (<xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Álvarez et al., 2008</xref>).</p>

               <p id="par0355">Remarks: although the material is limited and poorly preserved (no articulated specimen was found), this species is easily recognizable by its transversely oval outline, fine, slightly nodular, ribbed ornamentation, and large foramen. <italic>M. truncata</italic> is well known in the Central Paratethys where it can be locally abundant (<xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Dulai, 2004</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>). From the Moravian Miocene it is reported for the first time. Today it is known from the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern North Atlantic (<xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Brunton and Curry, 1979</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1979</xref> and <xref rid="bib0150" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1993</xref>), as well from the Indian Ocean (<xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Bitner et al., 2008</xref>). Its depth range is wide (<xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 2007</xref>) but most common is from 60 to 600 meters.</p>

               <p id="par0405">Remarks: <italic>Platidia anomiodes</italic>, already recorded from Kralice by <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Procházka (1893)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Toula (1893)</xref>, is the most common species in the studied assemblage. The specimens are entirely consistent with those already described from the Central Paratethys (<xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0035" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Dulai, 2004</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>). The shell is small, smooth, oval to subcircular in outline with a short, straight hinge line and a large, amphithyrid foramen, flanked by narrow deltidial plates. The teeth are small, and supported by short, divergent dental plates. The inner socket ridges are massive, extending beyond the hinge margin. The dorsal median septum is short but high.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0410">Today, <italic>P. anomioides</italic> is a cosmopolitan species widely distributed in all oceans and having a very wide depth range from shallow water to 2000 m (<xref rid="bib0155" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 2007</xref>).</p>
            </sec>

         <title>Discussion</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0415">The brachiopod fauna, collected in the Middle Miocene deposits at two outcrops, Kralice-II and Kralice-III, in Kralice nad Oslavou, Moravia, Czech Republic (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>), contains eight species. The assemblages of the two localities display a great similarity, having five species in common, i.e. <italic>Cryptopora lovisati</italic> (Dreger, 1911), “<italic>Terebratula</italic>” sp., <italic>Argyrotheca cuneata</italic> (Risso, 1826), <italic>Megerlia truncata</italic> (Linnaeus, 1767) and <italic>Platidia anomioides</italic> (Scacchi and Philippi, 1844). One species, <italic>Joania cordata</italic> (Risso, 1826) found in Kralice-II, is not present in Kralice-III, and in turn, <italic>Novocrania</italic> sp. and <italic>Megathiris detruncata</italic> (Gmelin, 1791) were not found in Kralice-II. In both assemblages, <italic>C. lovisati</italic> and <italic>P. anomioides</italic> dominate, constituting more than 75% of the material; other species occur in negligible numbers. <italic>Novocrania</italic>, <italic>C. lovisati</italic> and <italic>M. truncata</italic> are recorded for the first time in the Miocene deposits of the Moravian part of the Carpathian Foredeep.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0420">All species recognized in Kralice are known from other Miocene Paratethyan localities; however, the dominance of C<italic>. lovisati</italic> and <italic>P. anomioides</italic> makes the investigated assemblage unusual. Typically, Megathyrididae is the dominant family among brachiopods of the Central Paratethys (cf. <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1990</xref>, <xref rid="bib0025" ref-type="bibr">Bitner, 1993</xref>, <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Bitner and Pisera, 2000</xref>, <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Dulai, 2007</xref>, <xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Dulai and Stachacz, 2011</xref> and <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Popiel-Barczyk and Barczyk, 1990</xref>). Extant representatives of Megathyrididae are mostly shallow water species, with a cryptic mode of life (<xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1979</xref>). On the other hand, <italic>Cryptopora</italic> and <italic>Platidia</italic> are deeper water brachiopods. The modern species <italic>C. curiosa</italic> from the Indian Ocean, which appears to be closely related to <italic>C. lovisati</italic>, is most common between 300–600 m (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Logan et al., 2008</xref>). Extant <italic>P. anomioides</italic> is eurybathic, being most common in the Mediterranean Sea between 200–300 m (<xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Logan, 1979</xref>) but in the Red Sea it occurs below 500–600 m (<xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Logan et al., 2008</xref>). Thus, an environment deeper than 100 m is suggested for the Kralice deposits. These results strongly support previous estimation of a paleodepth of 100–200 m inferred from other fauna by <xref rid="bib0075" ref-type="bibr">Brzobohatý (2001)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0210" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">Zágoršek et al., 2008</xref>.</p>
